Acheron (mission) is a map appearing in Unreal II: The Awakening .

Map description Edit

A living planet being terraformed by the Izanagi. It consists on the landing zone for John's PeaceKeeper (located southwest of the map), a small compartment meters from this starting point, and the main Izanagi base, which is located in the center of the map. In one of the holes lies the second part of the map, a big underground passage containing an Artifact at the very end. Acheron is the first map in the game where the player has to face human enemies.

Trivia Edit

  • There are glitches in certain spots where it’s actually possible to fall off the edge of the map, catch yourself in some clipping plane during your fall into oblivion and be stuck in place looking at skewed partial fragments of objects all across the map! Luckily, this is a rare and easily avoidable problem, and can be solved with the Ghost cheat code.[1]
  • According to previews, the map would be featured later in the campaign, evidenced by John getting access to the Sniper Rifle in this mission, while in the final game said weapon doesn't appear until the following mission.
  • On the Xbox version, the mission is split into two maps: the surface and the inside of the planet. The mission ends when riding the elevator back up(possibly because it would mean returning to the first map). This is because of the hardware limitations of the console.

Easter egg Edit

  • Jumping from the initial building onto the lowest point of the big upper ring will trigger a floating image of Abraham Lincoln laughing. At the end of the left hand of the ring, there's a shield pack, a health pack, and a grenade pack.

Preview notes Edit

"The first mission we saw showed your ship, Atlantis, approaching a planet that's entirely covered with a giant organism. Over thousands of years, the organism drew power from one of the mysterious artifacts in the game to grow to its monumental size, and the player's mission is to retrieve the artifact before a greedy terran corporation does. The corporation already has an excavation effort under way, so the first step is to infiltrate the defensive perimeter. Even during this battle between what are essentially space marines, there are dramatic moments. The level is enormous, and there's a scaffold built above the gigantic maw of the planetary organism. At times, guards will fall over the railing into the chasm below, and the sense of scale is like something out of a big-budget movie. Once you descend in a construction elevator into the alien itself, things are very different. The environment is filled with a greenish gas, with innocuous little white worm creatures floating around as terran guards attack. After you take the artifact, there's a new threat. The organism releases what are essentially immune-system antibodies to attack you and protect the artifact.

The terran guards are in powered armor suits, as is your character, so it takes some serious weaponry to take them down. Even at this early point in the game, you have a good selection of human weapons, including a shotgun, a sniper rifle, an assault rifle, and a rocket launcher. The weapon models are all incredibly beefy, much larger than what an unarmored soldier would be able to carry. The grenade launcher is modular, with six different types of grenades--including EMP, frag, smoke, toxic, and stasis--and each type is more appropriate than the others in particular situations. The human weapons are only a portion of the total number of 14 weapons, and the others are picked up from the various alien opponents you face later in the game."
Gamespot[2]
"The first level we saw started on the second deck of the Atlantis, where we met shipmate Aida, who briefed us on the upcoming mission. Apparently much of the planet below had been covered by a single organism, which is slowly being destroyed by a group of mercenaries. Aida specifically tells you not to get involved in any fighting, but that wouldn't make for a very exciting game, would it?

Once our character landed on the planet, fighting soon broke out, and continued until we made our way down inside the the planet...and the creature. Eventually, we reached a chrysalis with some charges left behind by the mercs, which you set off. At this point, the creature, which had mostly been ignoring you, takes notice and sends his immune system after you."
Gamespy[3]
"In another scenario, while exploring a huge creature's insides, you'll have to take on its immune system."
