The 'Drone'[]

The backbone of the Swarm's forces seen throughout Alien Swarm, the Drones (or referred to as the 'Alien Adult') are the most numerous and are always present in large groups. Drones can be easily identified by their black skin colour with a red stripe along with two bladed arms and two smaller arms with clawed hands. They are easy to kill alone, but make up with their speed and numbers, able to close in onto a Marine within moments. Drones can be killed with a few shots and a puff of a flamethrower is enough to light up an entire mob, effectively cutting through their hordes with ease. It is still advised to take caution as being cornered by a swarm of Drones without support can lead to a quick death. Drones have a chance of spawning in as an 'Uber', which is essentially a much bigger and stronger Drone. These creatures reappear in the Source version of the game, looking slightly different although bearing the same attributes as the ones in the UT2K4 version.

Awards[]

  • The mod won the second edition of the MSUC in the categories Best Non-FPS mod (Phase 3), Best Voice Pack or Audio Modification (Phase 3) and Best Non-FPS Mod (Phase 4). It also reached third place in the category Best Level Using Original Content (Phase 3) and reached fourth place in the Grand Finals.
  • The mod also won Gamespy's Mod of the Year award in 2004.[1]
"As you've probably figured out by now, 2004 was an awesome year to be an Unreal Tournament fan. Aside from the all the great modes and maps that shipped with the game, a flood of new mods hit the 'net as part of the "Make Something Unreal" contest. There was no shortage of great mods that we could talk about, but at the end of the day, the one that we thought stood out the most was Alien Swarm, from Black Cat Games.

Unlike most mods, Alien Swarm isn't focused on fragging other players. In fact, it's not even first-person! Primarily a tactical top-down co-op mod, Alien Swarm lets players lead a team of space marines through a series of futuristic locales infested with big, nasty bugs. Games can be played as single maps or as part of a larger campaign, and different character classes are able to improve skills and use a variety of different equipment to make it through each base. Interesting ideas like this are always common in the mod community, but rarely do they actually see the light of day and turn out this well. It's the perfect game to break out at your next LAN party."
