Map description[]

Joust is a very close-quarters map. This map is shaped like the letter "I", and the flags are located very closely to each other, leading down a narrow hallway. The player spawns at the ends of the horizontal lines, but on the side of the opponent's flag. To capture the flag the player must barrel down the narrow passage that directly connects the flagbases, while fighting/avoiding the other player.

Walkthrough[]

"Chaos and death wait for those that stop to take a breath. Don't think... don't pause... don't even blink, Welcome to the league's futuristic take on the ancient art of jousting."
Mission description

This map can appear as one of the two selectable maps for the Head-To-Head mode against an enemy team's leader, whether you've been challenged or you're the challenger.

Tips and tricks[]

  • There are only 2 spawn points per team. If you have more players than that on your team, you can stand on the enemy spawn points, preventing them from spawning. Your team is then free to score as many points as possible before an admin bans you for exploiting.

Prima Official Guide[]

"This map is suitable for two teams of two (maximum). You start at one of two alcoves leading to a main corridor. There's the same structure at the corridor’s other end, with a flag at either end, and that's the extent of this level! This is a great way to practice fleeing with flags, shooting from the hip, and wall dodging.

Map Patrol
You spawn on either side of your own flag. When you turn at the junction, you see a long corridor to the other flag and base. This is an elongated "H" shape, with a lightning gun (to the left of your own flag if you're looking toward your opponents) and a rocket (on the other side).

Flag Waving: Victory!
The action always centers around the main corridor and involves lightning gun and rocket fire. Become proficient in both weapons before you try this level. Fire lightning guns from the hip or you'll be outclassed in seconds. Predict where your opponent will move and fire at the spot he will be going to. If your foes aren't zigzagging down that corridor … victory is easier!
Always move and shoot. Never stand still or you'll be toasted. Don't wait at your flag either, as this just prevents you (and possibly your teammate) from getting anywhere near your foe. Zoom toward the opposing flag as quickly as possible, using a mixture of translocating and running/ jumping to reach it. Bind your keyboard to flick between translocator and weapon to be quicker on the draw.
Learn to wall dodge and avoid the barrage of fire. Throw your translocator over your enemy's head. If he ignores it, warp and attack him from behind. If he fires on it, attack him while he's preoccupied. Nasty!"

Trivia[]

  • A number of brushes and meshes outside the map indicate that this level used DOM-Suntemple as a base for its construction.

Popularity[]

Main article: Annex:Unreal Tournament 2004 Final Stats
  • Until the stats for the game were shut down, the map held the distinction of being the 69th. most played UT2004 map of all-time, with over 37.200 matches.[1]

Accolades[]

  • The map was mentioned as the 10th most innovative UT2004 level design at BeyondUnreal.[2]
"Love it or hate it, this official UT2004 capture the flag map tries something that none other before it has tried: each player starts beside the opposing flag and attempts to barrel down a narrow corridor with it, kill the opponent, and return his or her own flag for a cap. A conglomeration of "borrowed" level pieces, it's clear that this is no artistic showpiece. Should capture the flag be played in a tiny level the shape of a capital "I"? That's debatable. What isn't debatable is that Epic was trying something different. And that's why Joust is on the list."
