The twisted skeleton of an ancient tree towers above you, giving lie to the fragile beauty that has slowly reclaimed the abandoned fueling station. There is still poison moving through the soil beneath your feet, and still many battles to scar the land."
Map description

CTF-Maul is a Capture the Flag map from Unreal Tournament 2003 and Unreal Tournament 2004. In both games, it's one of the stock maps.

Map description[]

Maul is an extremely jagged rundown station, which looks more like a post apocalyptic area. Both bases are separated by a big wall with two destroyed sections acting as the only connections between them, aside of translocations. Each side (Red/Blue Side) has two tanks, while the Red/Blue Base (located at the north and south extremes, respectively) is a mid-sized, three-level structure. Only the lower and mid levels are accessible inside of this base, while the upper level (Red/Blue Roof) can only be accessed by translocating. As expected, this roof (holding an antenna) is used for defensive purposes, with only the own side being visible at all.

"Her eyes are devoid of life, empty orbs that take in the world with an unfeeling gaze. A thin trail of spittle runs untended from her tightly gagged mouth, yet she never rubs it away. Only one thing brings a spark of vitality to this tortured soul: the suffering of others."

Before playing this match, you're given the chance to switch this map with either CTF-FaceClassic or CTF-Citadel by paying 110 game units.

Tips and tricks[]

  • The map is mostly symmetrical, however the terrain on each side is slightly different. This makes flag running on the blue side of the map slightly easier as the terrain slopes up a bit more naturally on the outer extremes of the map.
  • The lack of powerups in the map means that you and your team must coordinate and take care of your own health pickups in matches where Adrenaline is disabled. This also makes controlling the enemy pickups a very important objective, as you're handicapping your enemy of a very important resource.
  • The massive fuel tanks provide some decent cover, while sneaking in and rushing out of the enemy base.
  • Due to the highly uneven terrain, the Link Gun is the most recommended weapon to take down enemies.

Prima Official Guide[]

"Maul is a small, fast, and deadly Capture the Flag arena with open yet uneven terrain. The team bases are at either end of the arena, with a crumbling retaining wall atop the hill that separates them.
Interior: Each team base is a cylindrical two-story tower with entrances to the ground floor on either side. Inside the base is a jump pad that takes you up to the second floor.
The second floor contains the Rocket Launcher and the team flag. It also has a 360-degree sniper window that you can use to cover your team's half of the arena or leap from for a quick exit. You can also translocate through this window to instantly reach the second floor of a base.
Using your Translocator, get to the roof of the base, where you find a Lightning Gun. You can translocate even farther up to the little platform above the base.
To the left of each base (as you face the enemy base) is a Minigun, halfway between the base and the fuel tank.
To the right of each base is a Link Gun, halfway between the base and the other fuel tank.
A Flak Cannon sits in the center of each side of the arena, in front of the base and between the two fuel tanks.
Shock Rifles rest on either side of the retaining wall. They're on the right side if you're facing the blue base and on the left if you're facing the red base.

Game Plan
Offense: As with all CTF games, half the offensive strategy is reaching the enemy base without presenting yourself as a sniper target. Fortunately, the arena offers plenty of natural obstacles to duck behind and weave around. Translocate frequently to cover ground quickly and keep a sniper from getting a bead on you.
If you are skilled with the Translocator, the best route to the enemy flag is to translocate through the front window of the second floor of their base.
If you aren't crack with the Translocator yet, get that way fast. Until then, you have to use the base's side doors and jump pad to reach the flag.
Once you have the flag, the best way out is to jump out of that front window and run as if your pants were on fire. The area directly in front of the base is the most open terrain in the level, so head for the cover of the fuel tanks as quickly as possible, and dodge like crazy as you go.
Once you get past the retaining wall, it's all downhill—literally. Continue to weave around obstacles such as boulders and trees to keep your opponents from securing a direct line of fire.
Defense: The high ground in Maul is the key to successful defense. There is no better position for a sniper than the roof of the base. You can pick up a Lightning Gun there, and also get an unobstructed view of your entire half of the level.
The tops of the fuel tanks are also good sniper positions, although they tend to leave you a little too exposed. There's not much room for dodging, and they're not as high as the roof of the base.
The flag areas are also good backup defensive positions, especially because the Rocket Launcher and its ammo constantly respawn in there. You can lock on and lob rockets at enemies coming over the hill. If they get into the base, you can also deal with them up close and personal.
Finally, stationing a defender behind the retaining wall is a great nasty trick to play on an opponent. Your opponents have to come through one of the holes in the wall, unless they translocate over it. You're guaranteed to surprise them if you're waiting for them when they run right past you."

Capture Tips[]

The following are a series of tips released by the defunct website Capture.

"One of the smallest Capture the Flag maps is Maul. It is great for small teams to conveniently practice their attacking and defending skills on a small scale which can then be applied to the larger maps within the Tournament. Maul has a very standard CTF map layout with the common 'mirroring' that we see in almost all of the DDOM and CTF maps. The flags are located within the 'command centres' at each side of the map.
This map isn't chosen by clans very often because of the side; it's small, making it difficult to design complicated strategies for. An effective defensive player should be able to switch between camping the flag and rushing the enemy invaders. Because of the size, there are plenty of opportunities to go for the frag, as long as you have team members to cover your flag runs, this strategy should be ok. Ever felt like rushing blindly over the hill, not knowing what was on the other side? You'll have plenty of opportunities to do so.
The flag rooms are in the old command centre on either side. Not much within these apart from a Rocket Launcher and ammo. Above the flag room, on top of the command centre structure, is a Lightning Gun and ammo; great for picking off the other team as they run down the hill.
With various ammo placements, the map is easy to attack, as you can run down with a Link Gun, and hit the base hard with just the pick-ups outside. On defense, some of you who like to pitch tents can wait for attackers to come up the jump pad or through the window.
To get in, you have two options: going up the jump pad, or through the window using your translocator. The easiest way in is down the hill on either left or right side, hugging the cover provided by the oil tanks and terrain, then in the door on either side, and up the jump pad. You have to watch for campers at the top who will guard the jump pad with Rocket Launchers or Flak. To plan your attack well, you need to know who or what is up in the flag room. Just in front of the command centre is a Flak Cannon and ammo, so get the Flak spam going into the window quickly to cover your entrance.
Once you have the flag, watch for campers on top of the command centre, who will be waiting to nail your ass as you start running up the hill. So long as you have cover and can jump around like a bouncy ball, you should be able to get over the hill.
Defenders need various weapons to try and stop the flag runner from getting over the hill. However, once the enemy flag carrier is over, the defenders become attackers and will be slaughtered as the other team lets their flag carrier come home. Just so long as you have enough firepower, you can get your flag back and move in for a swift counterattack.
Hiding in this map isn't an option. So don't try it. Instead, get your weapon of choice and ammo and get your team members to cover your ass if the flag isn't home."
HUNTER

Offense[]

  • Watch out for potshotters from the center hill on either side.
  • One strategy that is often used is to begin to run around the power stations on either side (the big orby buildings) and then backtrack slightly to go around the other side. This will occasionally throw off people who are trying to cut you off.
  • Another running method is to take the flag straight out the left side through the gulchy area.

Defense[]

  • There are a few spots on the map which make defense a bit easier:
    • The most obvious is the center hill near the big rock. This location allows you to take potshots at the enemy flag carrier as well as get to either side of the map quickly to drop flak shells or pop combos.
    • Another location that is often used is right in the flag room. Rockets are a good weapon to use in this location.
    • Another place is above the flag room where you can snipe easily, but are a sitting duck.

Trivia[]

  • A howling wolf, an owl, and crickets can be heard in the background.
  • On high details, a waterfall can be seen behind the red base but not the blue.

Popularity[]

Developer's Notes[]

"I'm a big fan of CTF-Maul, that's the gorgeous CTF map that has been shown quite a bit."
Cliff Bleszinski[2]

Preview Notes[]

"James Schmalz went over to the server and said they were going to fire up some CTF. (...) The map he loaded up was called Maul (...). I would have to say that this might be the Facing Worlds of UT 2003 in terms of it being a HUGE favorite of all UT players. It's not designed for as big a crowd but it's so nicely laid out and balanced that I would have been satisfied just playing that level all day (ok, maybe not, but you get the idea). The map is going to be good for about 5-7 a side maximum in my opinion. Seperating the two bases is a steep hill littered with debris and at the top a crumbling wall which allows only two access points. The gameplay is frantic and fun and there were a couple of times I had to just stand up and walk around because I knew I was getting a little bit too into it. Out of all the maps we played on (there were 10) this was my hands-down favorite. There were other levels with more eye candy but none that felt as all around great as this one. Mark said at this point "I count 19 maps that I think would be ready for ship right now, but that's just my personal opinion - we are going to have over 30 in the final.""
