The following is a meta-article, which explains a concept which usually falls out of one of the wiki's categorizations, yet it's still important to explain something.

Camping is a gameplay term in the Unreal series.

Overview[]

Camping occurs when a player hides in a spot and frags opponents or destroys nodes/cores in a location that is hard to see or difficult for players to reach. Sniping from a hill is an example of camping. While some consider it a "noob tactic" for those who are perceived as cowards and unable to engage in a one-on-one fight, many people still engage in camping. Although camping can lead to fragging many opponents, especially with good aim, it makes the camper more vulnerable to headshots. Moreover, while occupied with camping, someone might sneak up from behind, resulting in the camper's demise before they can react.

Common weapons for camping include the Lightning Gun, Sniper Rifle, Shock Rifle, AVRiL (if the user's aim is good), Hellbender rear turret, Cicada laser turret, Goliath, and Scavenger.

There are various types of camping, such as spawn camping, powerup camping, teleporter camping, translocator camping, vehicle camping, and frag camping.

Spawn camping[]

One of the most annoying types of camping, typically seen in Onslaught or Warfare. Campers often use the Manta or Mine Layer for spawn camping. The camper waits in a hard-to-see location, taking advantage of the moment when players spawn and are focused on reaching the Weapon Locker. Spawn campers use this time to swiftly run over or kill an enemy. It only takes two spider mines to kill a player or one against a slightly injured player with health in the high 90s.

Powerup camping[]

Occurs when someone waits at a location with an essential powerup, such as a Redeemer, Target Painter, Ion Painter, or other critical powerups. They consistently secure the powerup upon spawning, detracting from the game experience for other players.

Teleporter camping[]

Involves waiting at a teleporter, usually with a Shield Gun/Impact Hammer, Flak Cannon, or a Sniper Rifle pointed at headshot level. When someone uses the teleporter, they are instantly killed. The drawback is that you are likely to be hit with a headshot if it is in an open area, and if you stand too close to the teleporter, they might telefrag you, resulting not only in embarrassment, but also in them getting a frag.

Translocator camping[]

The rarest type of camping. A player sets their Translocator at a location, such as the entrance to the base or the base of the flag, where it is nearly impossible to see. When someone gets close to the translocator disk, they either telefrag them or blow them up with a surprise flak grenade to the face. Considered the most honorable type of camping, as it is not truly camping unless one stays in one spot and views the camera for the entire time. Translocator camping is often used to guard choke points or an objective, such as the flag in Capture the Flag.

Vehicle camping[]

Essentially the same as powerup camping, but with vehicles. It tends to be more annoying and hated than powerup campers. The most disliked ones are Raptor, Leviathan, Darkwalker, Nightshade, and Fury campers. With the release of the new Necris vehicles in Unreal Tournament 3, there were many more vehicle campers than in Unreal Tournament 2004.

Frag camping[]

The most common form of camping. Frag campers hide in a location like a hill that is hard to see, then start fragging people. Frag campers can be useful for eliminating enemies, but the major drawback is they tend to hog vehicles and prevent others from using them until they are finally taken down.
