Cryox is a cut beta map of the single-player mode of Unreal.
Overview[]
The description of the map is based on the 1998 february beta version since there's no fully developed version released.
Cryox is one of the many crashed Mercenary starships which transports/stores liquid nitrogen throughout the ship and that's where the name of the map comes from. The level heavily involves swimming in wide and narrow pipes/tubes through the ship. Since it's a Mercenary starship, the map also involves battles with the Mercenaries and Mercenary Elites. Though first they seem to be peaceful and are not attacking the player, some Mercenaries are automatically hostile. There's only one Slith located on this map in the liquid nitrogen, the Nitrogen Slith would have been used here, but they were also cut from the final version of Unreal. It's believed that more Nitrogen Sliths would have been on the map for more variety of enemies the player had to fight with.
The goal of the level is to find the ship's engine in the liquid introgen and open a door which leads to the next level. Since it's a beta map and it's unfinished, it's unknown what the final objective would have been to this map other than finding the engine and go through the door. There's optional areas on the map too where the player combats with the Mercenaries and presses buttons to open different doors.
Tips and tricks[]
The map has 2 major secrets and 2 little one.
Right after the starting area, there are fuse boxes on the wall the mercenaries "fixing". If you shoot the ones that have a connection on the wall to the ceiling, two secret doors will open up with ammo, health and there's a mercenary behind one of the doors.
The other two secrets can be either reached by swimming through the liquid nitrogen, or shooting special fuses in some of the places patrolled by mercenaries.
Trivia[]
- The name Cryox comes from liquid nitrogen (the liquid state of the chemical element, nitrogen at low temperature). The x at the end of it indicates that the map was made by Cedric 'Inoxx' Fiorentino. His maps usually have the letter "x" in them like Terraniux, Extreme and Nexus.
