Dark Arena is the eighth map of the single-player mode of Unreal.
Map description[]
The Dark Arena is where the first boss battle takes place. Within a barren valley looms an ancient Nali structure with an air of grim foreboding. As the player explores the perimeter of this remnant of some darker chapter in Nali history, the distant growl of a terrible beast suggests that a tough fight lies ahead.

Trivia[]
- Levelshots for the map were added in the OldUnreal version 227j patch.
- Turning Multitexture off will make the skybox have very different coloring, the sky will be dark reddish-blue with a bright sun in the right corner instead of the original cloudy white sky with a barely visible sun.
Development[]
- The February 1998 beta version of the map combined it with Harobed Village, as well as having less rooms in both parts. However the teleporter still took you to a different version of Harobed. Unmodified, you could only play the "Dark-included one" by using cheats and skipping the dark end teleporter.
- The February 1998 version (which is still more like a 1997 version) is a very different building/level in practice that only contains the ring surrounding the arena and the arena itself.
- The May 07 beta locks its main entrance doors permanently once you face the Skaarj inside. So it's always advised to go to the cellars first, as that makes backtracking possible.
- The Shareware OEM version known as Unreal: Special Edition has this level also combined with Harobed, however, the order screen pops up once you enter through the entrance into the grass and if you bypass that, an invisible wall blocks you from progressing.
- Versions between February 1998 version and May07 beta, shown in preview screenshots only, show that the level used to have Skaarj Troopers guarding the entrance outside, thus making it the first level where they'd appear.
- Originally this level used to use the Swamp Castle texture set and was even completely different in the pre-reboot version (early 1997/late 1996) but it was already called "Dark". The February beta version even uses one texture that is duplicate in the Swamp Castle set. It seemed to have been just retextured from one of the earlier 1997 versions into using the NaliCast set.
- There used to be more trees on cliffs in some beta versions and the Titan used to be tougher to kill. Originally, the player was supposed to help himself by lowering the arena mover into the lava, similar to the Velora Pass solution, given that there is lava in the february version under the arena and the platform is a mover that is not used.
