Duel is a gametype found in Unreal Tournament 3 and Unreal Tournament 4. It is also found in Unreal Championship and Unreal Championship 2: The Liandri Conflict under the name Survival.

Overview[]

The game is a take on the "winner stays, loser leaves" mode of play. Two random players start playing the game with Deathmatch rules; the one who reaches the score limit or the one who has the most frags at the end of the round time limit stays in the match, and the loser goes spectator. The match ends when one player reaches the round won limit.

However, if both players are tied by the end of the time limit, the game will initiate overtime, granting the players two more minutes to break off the tie. If no conclusion is met during the first overtime, further overtimes will be added until the condition is dealt with and a winner is decided.

In Unreal Tournament 4 a new addition was introduced in the form of players being able to choose between two spawnpoints picked at random. This opened the door to new strategies, as there's now a lesser chance of a player being forces to spawn in a bad or disadvantageous position.

Scoring[]

  • UC2
    • A player scores one point by winning a round.
  • UT3/UT4
    • A self-frag deducts your score by one point.
    • A player who kills their opponent adds a score by one.

Tips and tricks[]

Main article: 1v1
  • Duel may seem simplistic on the surface, but it's actually a game mode of hidden depths. Survival is as important as fragging, so gaining and maintaining map control are your objectives to win and control the game on your terms.
  • Map Control is composed of combination of both map knowledge, item timing, and positioning.
    • Knowing and timing the map's items are your first sub-objectives to gain map control. By consistently denying high-valued items such as weapons, armor and health packs.
      • Timing is where you need to know when each item is available. By picking up an item, Shield Belt for example, take a mental snapshot of when you took it (60 seconds; 09:00), and do a simple calculus of when it will respawn again (08:00).
      • On every map, items are placed in specific locations, and knowing where to go in each and every item will grant you map knowledge.
    • Positioning, on the other hand, is learning the map layout to take advantage of sneaky angles and sight lines that enables you to maximize damage output.
      • Discovering shortcuts and routes ensure that you can reliably outmaneuver your opponent and gain you the edge of accessing items, or gain frags.
      • Associating the audio cues will gain you an insight and information on your enemy's whereabouts, without needing a line of sight, giving you a step ahead of making decisions.
      • Assessing the situation by examining your environment and your resources, as well as those of your opponent will give you which course of action to take. For example in DM-LeaObservatory, the Shield Belt spawns in 10 seconds and you're above the platforms, in which your opponent wasn't and is below you.
  • It may be told to you in this block of text that this is (safe to say) complex from the inside. But with the amount of time and effort, you can improve. This can be done by conducting VOD Reviews, feedback from your spectators and/or opponents, and watching others' Duel matches.
