The following is a meta-article, which explains a concept which usually falls out of one of the wiki's categorizations, yet it's still important to explain something.

This is a list of easter eggs found across the maps in Unreal Championship, Unreal Tournament 2003 and Unreal Tournament 2004.

For the media gallery, check Easter eggs/UC-UT2003-UT2004/Gallery.

Unreal Championship[]

  • On the level DM-Flux2, go to the frozen exterior and look for the door near the Link Gun and the Double Damage. Look around, find two vents, and shoot them, then head for the door near the Rocket Launcher. You'll find a frozen cow.
  • Following a complex sequence of actions in BR-EyeOfJahan spawns a goat that floats on midfield. The actions are:
  1. Walk to the entrance of the Blue pyramid.
  2. Touch all pathnodes (apples) and item spawners (health and weapon pickups).
  3. Kill yourself in the shallow water of the blue goal area.
  4. After respawning, kill yourself in the shallow water of the red goal area.
  5. Exit to the outside and witness the goat floating in midfield.
  6. (Optional) In order to re-trigger the egg, you have to kill yourself in the red pyramid's shallow water area.

Unreal Tournament 2003/Unreal Tournament 2004[]

  • There's a smiley inside of Outlaw and Garrett.
  • Mandible has an "Ejector Seat" sticker.
  • There was a feature in 2003 where the default announcer would scream the character names upon selection. This feature didn't made the cut for 2004, except for a character: Mr. Crow.
  • Some weapons and character models have inscriptions (The Redeemer's "Swallow This!") or warning stickers (Rocket Launcher).
  • Winning the ladder with Mr. Crow enables the TC-1200 for the Vehicle Arena mutator.
  • The Hellbender's license plate is changed to the consonants or full name of its owner, depending on the name's length.
  • Both Gorge and the Bio Rifle have media players in them.
  • The team symbol "Sym06" contains the Bulldog, a cut vehicle present in 2003 that was never completed for 2004.
  • Some maps feature hidden flyby sequences, such as BR-Bifrost, CTF-Citadel, CTF-Face3, DM-1on1-Albatross, DM-Antalus, DM-Asbestos, DM-Inferno, DM-Phobos2 and DOM-Suntemple. The process to enable each one is mostly the same:
  1. Make a copy of the map, making sure it starts with the MOV- prefix (i.e. MOV-BR-Bifrost.ut2) in the Maps folder.
  2. Open the map (i.e. MOV-BR-Bifrost.ut2) in UnrealEd.
  3. In the Level Properties, go to LevelInfo and change the DefaultGameType field to unrealgame.cinematicgame.
  4. Open the Matinee editor (left toolbar, the "MOV" button).
  5. Rename the sequence in the Scenes tab from flyby to StartGame.
  6. Save the map.
  7. Open UT2004, and go to the Community -> Movies tab.
  8. You'll see a new movie with the map's full name (i.e. "Bifrost Bases"). Open it and enjoy the flyby.

If you're reading this
you're already dead

There is no reality. There is only this.
This time. This place. This Contest.

Be the best. Unleash your power.
Lead your team in a battle of the mind.
Win the Tournament. If you can't,
step aside for someone who will.

Keep your eyes on the prize,
and your fingers on the trigger."
Screens
  • AS-RobotFactory:
    • A large robot is trussed up in ceiling wires just the other side of the open tunnels near the entrance to the AI generator and final objective. It appears to be leaking oil from its nether-regions.
  • BR-Skyline:
    • There's a room holding the Ion Painter in the middle tower that can only be accessed via firing a Translocator disc through a small hole in one of the pillars in the lower part of the Center Building.
  • BR-Slaughterhouse:
    • There's a zone with a funny name in the Blue Base: "This guy's Chuck. Ground Chuck in the Blue room". The players can only access it via falling from the Blue Goal into the pit and it's surrounded by four saws. The red side respective message is "OOoh, he's dead in the Red".
    • There's a giant billboard above each team's base, advertising some sort of canned meat product. It's "55 percent ground beef, 45 percent our little secret". Judging by the sort of activities that take place in Slaughterhouse other than the butchering of cattle, it's not hard to guess what—or who—the other 45 percent of the meat comes from.
  • CTF-Chrome:
    • Each base has a small window. The Translocator can be thrown there, and it'll lead into the middle area.
  • CTF-Citadel:
    • Shooting the solitary star in the sky will cause all the spiked balls to become reflective (works offline only). Note that it's rather difficult to find the trigger, so you might need to summon a Redeemer in UT2004 since the weapon isn't present in that version of the map. Also note that, sometimes, it deactivates shortly after being activated, so it needs to be shot several times.
  • CTF-Face3:
    • Each upper side entrance has a dropdown that isn't meant for players to take. Rather, a Translocator disc must be thrown here.
  • CTF-LostFaith:
    • The shape of the map resembles a Fly, when seen from the Top-Down view.
  • DM-Deck17:
    • There are caution stickers across most parts.
  • DM-Gael:
    • At the bottom of the pit, the Gorge Fan from the intro of Unreal Tournament 2003 is trapped behind a glass window. Gorge himself, however, lays dead in a pool of blood, along with Brutalis and Wraith.
  • DM-Junkyard:
  • ONS-Tricky:
    • The Gorge fan from the intro of UT2003 can be spotted on the seats behind the Redeemer tower with a buzz cut and a T-shirt saying "Gorgeous Gorge".

Creator cameos and references[]

  • Two unused taunts of the male mercenary/human voicepack are "You're as good as CliffyB!" and "You're worse than Mark Rein!".[1]
  • Every once in a while, while playing the ladder, the team Epic Games, Inc. will appear in the "Other matches" tab after a match.
  • Changing the player's name to "CliffyB" causes bots to have the names of various Epic Games employees.
  • AS-BP2-Outback:
    • The pictures on the walls in the pub include a few of the author's friends (such as community members King Mango and SuperApe) as well as himself.
    • Near the entrance of the brewery a large picture is hanging on the wall, portraying CliffyB as the "Employee of the Month".
    • Among the "Zero Beer" billboards there are billboards referencing the UT fansite OceaniaUT.
  • AS-Convoy:
    • The second license plate in the middle train of the exploding truck says "B4G3L5".
    • Also from Convoy, CliffyB's name is written in the missiles. The full description is:
"YIELD: HIGH
MER: 120KM
OPT TEMP: 123
HEAD: CLIFF
MANUFACT: CTLS
SEIL: UT2K4"
Missiles
  • AS-FallenCity:
    • There are three posters named "AO - Men's Hair Spray", "Stu's Club" and "Phil's Bagels".
    • There's a advertisement in the bunker for "Phil's Bagels", which is a reference to Epic level designer Phil Cole and his obsession for bagels.
    • One of the streets is even called "Caudle Ave.", referencing of course artist Shane Caudle.
  • AS-RobotFactory:
    • The submarine from CTF-December and CTF-January appears at the distance during the initial area. It can be seen drifting in the ocean with level designer TomWithTheWeather's characteristic waving apple on board.
  • BR-DE-ElecFields and CTF-DE-ElecFields:
    • There are graffiti inscriptions named "XceptOne". They refer to their level designer, Juan Pancho 'XceptOne' Eekels, and are located in the lower middle area, in the inner ring, on the blue side.
  • DM-1on1-Trite:
    • The pictures used for the zone portals (thus only visible in UnrealEd) are portraits of its creator, Paul 'Tonnberry' Fahss, and are named 'f*g'.
  • DM-Asbestos:
    • CliffyB's picture is hidden in a wall near the Shock Rifle. To see it, you need to hit the ceiling above the Health Pack or Adrenaline pills in the room with the Lightning Gun four times with weapon fire (if done correctly you should see "Ownage!" in the message log), then go to the Shock Rifle and look up.
  • ONS-Frostbite:
    • There's an Easter Egg developer room. In order to see it, bump into 25 selected trees in the map with any vehicle and, at the Central Lake, in the tower at the very east, a room will open, leading to a secret area (similar to the one in DM-Codex) where a group picture can be found. This area, however, subtracts one health point per second, and requires a wall-dodge-jump in order to reach the very end.
  • ONS-Urban:
    • One of the destroyed road signs reads "Bleszinski Blvd", referencing lead designer CliffyB.
    • Another one reads "Caudle Ave", named after lead artist Shane Caudle.

Hidden notes[]

These notes can only be seen in UnrealEd or with a package analysis tool such as UT Package Tool:

"Special Thanks: Robyn & Col McCarthy, Eddy Respondek- My family. For their eternal patience with my "Unreal" addiction, and my general procrastination. I paid off though, didn't it?. Cliff Bleszinski & Epic Games- For giving me a chance. I hope Epic Games will continue to utilize the wealth of community talent out there. Not only does it make good business sense, but it gives someone a career, which is about the best gift you can give someone. I am in your debt. The UT2004 War Room Staff - Rogelio O, Phil C, Stu F, Ben B, Nate O, Laurent D, Dave H, David S, Ron P, Jeff G, Mat O and Steve P- It has been an absolute pleasure to work with them. They are probably best group of people I have ever met. I would recommend any of them without hesitation."

References to other works[]

  • A taunt from the robot characters goes "Faster. Stronger. Better.", a reference to the song "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger", by Daft Punk.
  • If you finish a match without allowing the opposing team to score a single point, instead of the generic "Perfect" that many other games use, the announcer will yell "Flawless Victory!", a reference to the Mortal Kombat series of games.
  • The Nightmare voicepacks have varying shoutouts to horror films such as "No tears, please. It's a waste of good suffering." (from Hellraiser) and "I'll swallow your soul!" (from the Evil Dead series).
  • Two of the Thunder Crash members are called Picard and Riker, after two members of the NCC-1701-D Enterprise from Star Trek: The Next Generation.
  • Gorge's team, their suit, and their name (Juggernauts), are shout-outs to the Juggernaut from the X-Men series.
  • One of the taunts found in the dummied out Unreal Championship voicepacks in 2004 have the characters saying "I'm sorry! Did I break up your concentration?", after a line said by Jules Winnfield in Pulp Fiction.
  • Winning an air-to-air fight with either the Raptor or the Cicada has the announcer yelling "Top Gun!", referencing the eponymous movie.
  • One of the team symbols introduced by the game has a man riding a big rocket. Its internal name is "Strange Love", a reference to the film Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.
  • The Scorpion's alternate horn in 2004 is the melody from the first line of the song "Dixie", also known as "The Dixie Horn".
  • AS-BP2-Outback:
    • The song used in the soundtrack is actually a sequel to the original "A Pub with No Beer" song written and performed by Gordon Parsons in 1954. The original song gently explores the "devastation" caused to a pub and its community when its beer supply is interrupted. The sequel that is used in the game was written and performed by Slim Dusty in 1959, and its lyrics tell us that everyone who participated in the first story is doing well now.
  • AS-Junkyard:
    • The map is likely a reference to the Scrapheap Challenge TV show, known as Junkyard Wars in the US, where contestants need to build a working machine using junkyard items.
    • There is a hidden bathtub near where the road from the magnet to the main gate and the road from the final checkpoint to the main gate join. This bathtub, with a fountain of brown goo coming from the drain could be a reference to Tubgirl, another famous shock site.
  • BR-BridgeOfFate and CTF-BridgeOfFate:
    • The maps are modelled after an environment from The Lord of the Rings (more precisely, from the movies).
  • BR-Slaughterhouse:
    • The beta version of the map had a description that included, for some reason, a reference to the G.I. Joe franchise, back when it was a Capture the Flag map:
"A plain-old slaughterhouse somewhere in Nevada has been converted into a training camp by Sgt. Slaughter of G.I. Joe. Later, it was decided that after the destruction of the Cobra terrorist organization, the number of training camps can be reduced. Finally, the facility was sold to Liandri M.C. and converted into a CTF battle arena."
  • CTF-Grendelkeep and DM-DE-GrendelKeep:
    • The name of the map, and part of it's description, are taken from Beowulf.
  • DM-Curse3:
  • DM-Inferno:
    • The description of the map explicitly references Dante Alighieri's The Divine Comedy.
  • DM-Leviathan:
    • The description of the map ("They say keep your friends close, and your enemies closer.") is a reference to the movie series The Godfather.
  • DM-Plunge:
    • The description of the map ("The bad moon... has risen.") may be a reference to the song "Bad Moon Rising" by the band Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Ral life references[]

  • The UT2003 intro, where Malcolm, Brock and Lauren are presented as a team, has a lot of influence from wrestling entrances.
  • Jakob, from the Thunder Crash team, is apparently a convict, due to the barcode on his forehead with the numbers "021136".
  • AS-BP2-SubRosa:
    • If you look really closely to the monitors in the central office, the text on the monitors with the missile and Matrix blueprints show the Unreal Tournament 2004 Patch Release Notes.
    • Another, smaller monitor there and near the last objective where you have to send the information show UnrealEd's Script Editor with Actor class open in Windows XP.
  • AS-RobotFactory:
  • CTF-Grassyknoll:
    • The description mentions that "There's no magic bullets here, no conspiracy." This, plus the name of the map being "Grassy Knoll" reference the conspiracies behind former US President John F. Kennedy's assassination.
