"Use a flashlight when you need to carry your light source with you. Flashlights have limited battery life however, so keep an eye on the power meter."
Unreal manual

The Flashlight is an item in Unreal and Unreal Mission Pack: Return to Na Pali.

Overview[]

The Flashlight is a temporary but portable light source, seen as an improvement over the Flare, which is a stationary but more common light source. The Flashlight's illumination is somewhat weak and has a yellowish color. It lasts for only about a minute, and as the battery drains, the light gradually becomes weaker until it ceases to function. Unlike the Flare, the Flashlight directs its beam in only one direction.

Leaving the Flashlight on drains its batteries rapidly, requiring the device to be replaced once the battery is depleted. To conserve battery life, players should turn off the Flashlight when it is not necessary to see in the dark. The battery level can be monitored via the bar below the inventory icon.

Its presence is very frequent, especially in dark levels like The Sunspire.

After obtaining the SearchLight, Flashlights become obsolete.

Trivia[]

  • Although the item doesn't appear in any official maps, it can be summoned in Unreal Tournament.

Development[]

  • A version of the flashlight called "U2FlashLight" appeared in Unreal II: The Awakening, before being made obsolete with one of the many engine upgrades pushed onto Legend Entertainment by Epic Games. Originally, it used a special light type that allowed for realistic stacked light effects, emulating a realistic flashlight. If you combine two beams in the regular game, you won't have the same thing/effect. The released Unreal II contains a leftover of this item which can be enabled by binding a key with the preset command to activate flashlight (the pre-alpha didn't have a special key yet, it activated just like the items in Unreal). However, because of the missing light type, it tends to flood the area with light, and is buggy on Static Meshes and some terrain. Some marines such as the ones in The Dorian Gray still use shoulder mounted flashlights, like the ones after Sector Commander Hawkins's death.
