Unreal

Mothership Lab is the thirty-second map of the single-player mode of Unreal.

Map description[]

Within the Mothership Lab, the player learns of shielding experiments being carried out by the Skaarj on their own soldiers. Meanwhile, he must drain the main generator's energy reserves to be permitted access to the Mothership Core.

Trivia[]

Development[]

  • The map has a continuity error, as it has a door at a start that is a disabled forcefield in the ExtremeDark version instead. The forcefield used to be there at earlier version and they forgot to change it for the Darkening version later. Screenshot showing that forcefield was shown even on some of the cover art for the game and in the GW Press Strategy Guide.
  • The February 1998 Beta has this map, Core and Gen as one map simply called Extreme.
  • The May 1998 Beta has some differences like the panels are operated only by the Skaarj, and that is the way to access the messages, but it might just be because of huge trigger delay. The Skaarj Officer that is in the test Skaarj room was meant to operate panels in the surrounding rooms as well at one point.
  • The same beta also has pillar energy coating in the optional area after the teleporters.
  • Levelshots for the map were added in the OldUnreal version 227j patch.

Author's Notes[]

"Extreme is the 2nd Level I did for Unreal. It's so big that I had to cut it in 7 parts:

The MotherShip Basement (ExtremeBeg)
The Skaarj Laboratories (ExtremeLab)
The MotherShip Core (ExtremeCore)
The Skaarj Generator (ExtremeGen)
Illumination (ExtremedGen)
The Darkening (Extreme Dark)
The Source Antechamber (ExtremeEnd).

I also did the Ending Sequence of the game (Endgame).

At the end of Extreme Core you reach the Skaarj Generator that provide the Energy for the MotherShip. After destroying it, you have to walk back in the core of the MotherShip which is unpowered this time. The power failure had some very unfortunate consequences : all the force fields which were locking the prisoners have been deactivated. Now all the badass Skaarj criminals, Mercenaries and furious Skaarj guinea pigs are walking free in the MotherShip. If you make you way through the MotherShip core again, you'll reach the end of the level and make the big jump to the Source."
