The following is a meta-article, which explains a concept which usually falls out of one of the wiki's categorizations, yet it's still important to explain something. |
A mutator is a built-in component to the game which adds features or change the game characteristics in the Unreal series. All of the multiplayer-based Unreal games have mutators, and some can be gametype-specific, such as "No Orbs" in UT3's Warfare gametype. Many modifications can be toggled on/off with the use of mutators.
Although, compared to conventional mods, changes made to the game are small, mutators can have a large impact on gameplay. For instance, Instagib is sometimes considered a whole new gametype.
Unreal Tournament[]
In order to use mutators, click on "Start Practice Session" and select the "Mutators" option under the "Match" tab. To enable a mutator, double-click on its name or drag it to the "Mutators Used" box. If "Always use this Mutator configuration" is checked, then the selected mutators will be saved and will be active the next time the player starts a practice session.

BigHead | Killing raises the size of your head, being killed reduces it. (Only available in the PlayStation 2 version by unlocking) |
Chainsaw Melee | The Impact Hammer is replaced by a Chainsaw. |
FatBoy | The more frags a player has, the more their bodies will grow. The more deaths a player has, the more their bodies will shrink. |
Hyper Speed | The speed of the game is raised to 150%. (Only available in the PlayStation 2 and Sega Dreamcast versions) |
Instagib DM | Removes every pickup from the arena, and gives the players an Enhanced Shock Rifle, which causes players to explode into gibs instantly upon being hit. |
Instant Rockets | The Rocket Launcher can only fire one rocket at a time as opposed to being able load multiple rockets at once. |
Jump Match | Enables players to jump extremely high. |
Low Gravity | Reduces the gravity of the map. |
No Powerups | Invisibility, Shield Belt, Damage Amplifier, Jump Boots and the Big Keg O'Health are removed from the map. |
No Redeemer | Redeemers are removed from the map. |
Relics | Add relics to the match. See the page for more info. (Bonus Pack 1) |
Slomo | The speed of the game is slowed to 50%. (Only available in the PlayStation 2 and Sega Dreamcast versions) |
Stealth | Makes everyone invisible during a match. |

Chaos: UT[]
The following mutators are only available in UT: GOTY Edition through the use of the Chaos: UT mod.

Unreal Championship and Unreal Tournament 2003/2004[]
Of the options available while selecting a map, there is a section called "Mutators." Picking up and moving Mutators will toggle them as on or off. If you select a gamemode that does not support a certain Mutator (such as Low Gravity on Assault), the mutator will be deselected.

Camp Fire | To prevent camping, all players carry a ticking time bomb. Kill your enemies to buy extra time. When the timer hits zero, your bomb explodes, killing you and anyone nearby. |
Character Weapons Only | Only your starting pistols and melee weapons are allowed. |
Classic UC | No adrenaline, locking, melee, or third person camera. Pure old school. |
Double Adrenaline | Players gain adrenaline twice as fast. |

Unreal Tournament 3[]
Go to the settings while selecting a map and click on "Mutators" to bring up the list of mutators. Each gametype has their own selection of mutators, unlike previous games, and all mods will be visible at the bottom of the list.

Trivia[]
- The Spanish translation for Unreal Tournament hides the Instant Rockets, Impact Arena, and Minigun Arena mutators, requiring the modification of a file. In addition, due to a spelling mistake, the Chainsaw Melee mutator doesn't work and requires another edit. All these problems were fixed with OldUnreal version 469a.
- In Unreal Championship 2, it is possible to unlock mutators by running through the Ascension Rites, the Challenges, or the Individual Ladders. They are usually found at the match that unlocks them.
