The Necris are a race appearing in the Unreal universe.
Overview[]
The Necris are a faction of combatants appearing in the Unreal Tournament series. Their depiction in the series is controversial due to different continuities between the games.
Unreal Tournament[]
The game describes the Necris as an alien race but provides little to no details about their origins. Developer Brandon Reinhart elaborates that the Necris are an alien race that was, "until now, rarely seen." Backstories for the Necris characters reveal the Necris race has a secret society known as the Phayder which has declared guerrilla war against Earth. Many of the Necris character backstories allude to this war via description of attacks against NEG military or civilian populations.
Unreal Championship 2: The Liandri Conflict[]
The game introduced the idea that the Necris are individuals who have died and been brought back to life via what is called the Necris Process. This process involves the reanimation of the body with the use of nanomachines called Nanoblack, which were created by the Phayder Corporation. The company has then framed them as the Black Legion in the Liandri Grand Tournament to represent their corporation.
The Liandri Mining Corporation uses the Necris Process to keep fan favorite combatants alive. When Brock was killed by Gorge outside the tournament, and therefore did not respawn, Liandri brought him back along with Lauren (who committed suicide shortly after learning of Brock's death).
After Selket was killed in the final match of the Championship against Anubis (her former lover), Liandri offered to reanimate her using the Necris Process as long as Anubis, now the Emperor of the Nakhti, agreed to serve their interests; namely, fighting and winning in the Tournament. Caring more for Selket than his position as Emperor, he accepted, and Selket was resurrected to stand by Anubis' side as his undead Empress.
Unreal Tournament 3[]
Playing a larger role in the game's plot, the Necris serve as the leading antagonists in Unreal Tournament 3, lead by Akasha. Declaring war on Earth, the Necris forces perform a full-out invasion of the planet (not Earth) but are quickly deterred by Ronin.
No longer a threat to the planet, the NEG don't perform a counterattack. However; after reacquiring a space station from Necris forces, Ronin team sets off to Omicron 6, the Necris homeworld, alone on a revenge mission against Akasha, a mission that tournament leader Malcolm does not support.
Since their initial appearance, the Necris have received many visual improvements to improve their alien reminiscent appearance. These include: Cyclops helmets, artificial arms and spines, and mechanical insect-like legs.
Involvement in the games[]
Unreal Tournament[]
The player can choose the Black Legion as a playable team, and faces several independent Necris such as Loque.
Unreal Tournament 2004[]
Kragoth and Thannis are the only playable Necris, and they can be bought at the beginning of the game as part of the player's team.
Unreal Championship 2: The Liandri Conflict[]
The Necris are a playable race in the game, with two playable characters at launch in Brock and Lauren; and with four extra characters (Calypso, Judas, Lilith and a necrified version of Selket) available in the Bonus Pack.
In the game, the Necris have their own version of the Dual Enforcers as their starting ranged weapon. This version of the Enforcer stuns the target, and its death message implies that they were siphoning their lifeforce all along. As for their melee weapon, the male Necris use the Dark Staff and the females use the Necris Swords. Finally, their shared Adrenaline abilities are Ethereal (turns the user invisible but adds a slightly-out-of-position hologram), Vampire (a portion of damage dealt to enemies turns into health) and Wraith (turns the user into a ghost, and allows them to reveal invisible enemies); as for personal abilities, Brock and Calypso share Fear (prevents an enemy from using Adrenaline abilities), Judas has Vampire Cloud (releases a nanoblack cloud that drains enemy health), Lauren and Lilith have Siphon (release nanoblack orbs that siphon their enemies' health and return it to their user) and Necris Selket retains her personal ability Flash (Blinds nearby enemies for a time).
As for their involvement in the story, it begins when the Robot Commentator asks Malcolm to talk about the rules of Overdose, only for Malcolm himself to deviate the attention towards the return of Lauren and the expensiveness of the Phayder Corporation's necrification process. At the end of the game, when Selket is killed at the hands of Anubis, the Liandri officer proposes to revive her using the expensive necrification process, with the condition of Anubis participating in the Tournament, a deal Anubis reluctantly agrees, leading to the Selket becoming a Necris herself.
Finally, both Brock and Lauren have their own individual campaigns, with Lauren unlocking Brock's and Brock taking place after the Tournament, much like Anubis's. Also, all the characters appear in different matches either as allies or as rivals.
Unreal Tournament 3[]
The Necris are the main antagonists of the game. Prior to the events of the game, under the leadership of Akasha, the Necris, with the help of the Krall, invade the colony of Twin Souls, leading to the death of most of its inhabitants, almost including the protagonist Reaper. This leads Reaper and his team to work for the Izanagi Corporation in exchange for a medical facility for Reaper's recovery, as well as close proximity to the Necris.
While in the earlier stages, the closest thing to a direct confrontation they had was against the Krall, in Act III: The Liandri Conflict, Malcolm briefs them on who they are, who they're lead by, and what their purpose is. The actual confrontation begins in Act IV: Calculated Losses, with the Necris outright invading Taryd and destroying, conquering and assimilating everything they can. After a successful repelling of the invasion, Reaper feels that they've wasted a lot of time following Malcolm's lead, so they depart from the Izanagi, with the corporation cutting all ties with them as they hijack a ship in order to go to Omicron 6 in order to battle the Necris directly. At the beginning of Act V: Disposable Assets, they land on the planet. This, needless to say, end bad for all of them.
In the game, the Necris have their own fleet of vehicles in the single-manned hoverbike Viper, the small tripod Scavenger, the tri-mode Nemesis, the device-deploying Nightshade, the flying Fury and the tripod terror Darkwalker. The design of the Bio Rifle in this game also seems inspired by Necris tech, even though its description mentions nothing of the kind.
The Necris have several arenas as their "home stages" such as DM-Fearless (where the Phayder Corporation was developing the Invulnerability armor), DM-Sanctuary (the main sanctuary across Omicron-6), DM-Sentinel (their home palace in Absalom), CTF-OmicronDawn (a former N.E.G. jumpgate overtook by nanoblack tubes), CTF-Vertebrae (also set in the home city of Absalom), VCTF-Sandstorm (an outpost regularly invaded by sandstorms), VCTF-Necropolis (the entrance to Absalom) and WAR-Floodgate (set in the slums of Old Absalom). They've also corrupted a number of locations such as the ones shown in VCTF-Corruption (whose blue base has nanotubes all across it), WAR-Avalanche (where nanotubes drop under certain conditions), WAR-Islander (WAR-Islander_Necris, where the roles of attacker and defender were inverted), WAR-Serenity (WAR-Serenity_Necris, with one of the sides having Necris vehicles) and WAR-Torlan (WAR-Torlan_Necris).
Additional bonus content such as the Titan Bonus Pack, meanwhile, adds the arenas DM-OceanRelic (which also introduces the Slow Field powerup), CTF-Searchlight (yet another sanctuary, originally meant to appear in the Campaign but cut at the last development cycles), CTF-LostCause (a temple set in the cliffs of Absalom) and CTF-Nanoblack (a nanoblack production facility), and corrupted versions of VCTF-Suspense (VCTF-Suspense_Necris) and WAR-Downtown (WAR-Downtown_Necris). There's also the map WAR-Hostile, which isn't set on neither Omicron-6 nor Taryd nor even outer space, but on Na Pali, and where the Necris are set to defend a discovery from reclaiming Axon forces.
