Overview

The subject of this article appeared in Unreal Tournament 2004.

"Set on the dried outskirts of a lush jungle continent, two factions clash in fierce combat for control of a major communications tower and its adjacent power supply. With the dam holding back the waters from the nearby jungle, the dried out riverbed running across the battlefield allows for an easy attack route into enemy territory and could provide a decisive victor with ownership of the enormous Comm-tower as the reward."
Map description

ONS-Torlan is an Onslaught map for Unreal Tournament 2004. It's one of the stock maps of the game, and is also part of the demo version of the game.

The map is mostly symmetrical, however, as usual, the terrain is slightly different on each side. Furthermore, the red team (assuming it's the first round in the match, as teams in ONS will switch bases with each round) can fire at the Raptor's spawn point (and damage said Raptor if it belongs to the enemy) at the central node by using the energy turret located on the outer wall near their own Raptor at their base. For the next round (if there is any), this small advantage will be available to the blue team, and so on until the match ends.

The bases are built exactly the same. There is a tall tower in the center of the map which is useful for sniping, as well as using the hills for cover from tank shells and to take shots at people at the nodes below.

For description purposes, we'll give each node a name:

  • Blue Prime Node: The node located east of the Blue base.
  • Blue Goliath Node: The node located in the northeast corner.
  • Center Node: The node located at the center of the map, in the lower level.
  • Red Goliath Node: The node located in the southwest corner.
  • Red Prime Node: The node located west of the Red base.

Link Setups[]

  • Default: Both Power Cores are connected to their respective Prime Nodes. From there on, there are two paths: Blue Prime Node -> Center Node -> Red Prime Node; and Blue Prime Node -> Blue Goliath Node -> Red Goliath Node -> Red Prime Node.
  • Square: Same as Default, but the Goliath Nodes aren't connected between each other, but to the opposite team's Power Core.

Trivia[]

  • During the early development days, the bases were different to their final form: the Power Core and the Tower switched places, and there was plenty of maneuvering space. Also in the Goliath nodes two Scorpions spawned.
  • Until CTF-BP2-Pistola was remade as CTF-Pistola in Unreal Tournament 4, this was the only 2004 map to be remade for a later Unreal game, as WAR-Torlan for Unreal Tournament 3.
  • The Prima Official Guide mentions that the map has a Target Painter, when in fact it has a Redeemer.

Popularity[]

Main article: Annex:Unreal Tournament 2004 Final Stats
  • Until the stats for the game were shut down, the map held the distinction of being the third most played UT2004 map of all-time, with nearly 1.260.000 matches.[1]

Preview Notes[]

"Buzz started gameplay off with a blitz on the Onslaught map ONS-Torlan. Mid-game two I caught a ride atop a tank turret, sniping the enemy with my lightning gun while the big gun of the Goliath belched out destruction (sorry I didn't take the screeny with me on the tank, bummer twas the funny). Larger teams will find the bigger Hummer-esque truck with it's two hard points and crew of three a fearsome adversary. The small single seater hover-bike felt to be the fastest way to get back into the fray. Even a few Counter Strike fanboys stopped and wandered over to watch the action, slack jawed by the detail dished out by even the poor rigs we thrashed eachother on."
BeyondUnreal[2]
"Anyone who's played the UT2004 demo will recognize this mid-sized map. "Torlan" features a little bit of everything -- a few vehicles at each point, two distinct chains to the enemy power core, and a Redeemer all the way at the top of the comms tower if you can fly a Raptor up there.

Don't get caught freelancing all over the map -- once your team loses nodes on your side of the field, they can be extremely hard to reclaim."
