Outpost 3J is the twenty-second map of the single-player mode of Unreal.
Map description[]
Outpost 3J is located on the floating isle of Na Pali, in Haven. It is somewhat of a precursor of the final levels of the game inside the Skaarj Mothership because it is the first level in Unreal to take place almost entirely in a Skaarj installation.
Deep within the Na Pali mountain, a hidden Skaarj base keeps a watchful eye on the Nali of the town and gives the Skaarj control over the skies. With nowhere left to run on this sky island, the player has no choice but to seek a way to return to the planet's surface.

Trivia[]
- If from the open windows after you've pushed the monk statues out, you jump across to the ledges around the church's smaller spires, you can go round and on to the roof. If you go along to the far end of the roof, you get a view of Na Pali Haven.
- The track used for the level, "Isotoxin (Unreal Mix)" by Andrew "Necros" Sega, was originally the title track for an older 1995 game called In Pursuit Of Greed. The most notorious change for this game's remix is the removal of the intro.
Development[]
- The February beta itself lacks the Skaarj base and Skaarj technology completely and only the end part of Gateway to Na Pali is in the "big" SkyTown map.
- Old versions of this level were called "Mountain Fortress", and, according to the Strategy Guide, had fans inside the water tube that you had to destroy to progress. This was removed in the May 07 version and the level is just given its current name. Temporarily there was even a different level, possibly partially based on Amethyst between the February version and the Skaarj tech base versions.
- The Skaarj used to wear different weapons in the May 07 beta, one of the Officers had a Minigun, making this one of the few maps where the gun appeared originally. Ironically, only two single-player maps in Unreal feature this gun, while in the beta in question at least four of them had it. This could be seen as an oversight.
- The original intention to get to the monk statues with items hidden in them was most likely to destroy the cross on top of the church, which is/was a mover that moves out of the way just like the glass in this map technically. But it was possibly seen as too much, so a pushable brick was added instead, while the original hint was in the cross mural.
- The old level before the skaarj technology base was most likely called "The Citadel", based on the french localization file.
- Levelshots for the map were added in the OldUnreal version 227j patch.
