The Skaarj Pupae (singular: pupa, also Pupae) are a baby monster found in the Unreal series.

Overview[]

Pupae are a relatively small (about 6 feet long, but only a foot or so tall) insect-like creature that behaves almost more like a spider than a Skaarj, though it still possesses the leap attack, the tusks, and the general face-shape. They are the Skaarj offspring, borne by the Skaarj Queen. At this point in their life cycle, Skaarj are quadrupedal, have a green skin, and somewhat resemble Earth's spiders. They have mandibles that later turn into the adult Skaarj's tusks. Pupae's presence can often be detected by the distinctive sound they make.

Each pupa is approximately 6 feet long and at least a foot tall, which are insect-like and the similarity to its adult form are the tusks and its general face-shape. Because they are newborns, they are very weak, they can be easily killed by even a Level 1 Dispersion Pistol (though it is highly unlikely that you have a Level 1 Dispersion Pistol by the time you first meet them.), and it is very hard for a Pupa to kill you.

The Skaarj life cycle can be compared to that of Earth's honey bees. Either the name "pupa" was chosen poorly for what is actually a larva, or the Skaarj life cycle works differently from that of Earth's animals.

Pupae attack the player by lunging at the player and stabbing them with their long front legs. They can also bite and grab hold of your legs, with a bone-crunching and salivating sound! This can momentarily immobilize you, which is particularly dangerous if you are fighting other monsters at the same time! Although Pupae normally crawl, they will resort to hopping to approach a distant target. This, in combination with their small size, can make it a little tricky to hit a Pupa. However, due to their limited health and damage output, Pupae only pose a small threat, except when they attack in swarms.

Skaarj pupae start appearing from The Sunspire, and play a large role in the final fight. They are fairly weak, but can tear an unwary player apart in seconds when found in groups. They have a tell-tale hissing sound, and will tend to scratch around on the ground, which can alert the player to their presence before any pupae are actually seen. Pupae tend to congregate in groups, and live, like spiders, in store-rooms and darkened, abandoned areas of Na Pali. They may be hiding in crates every now and then. They can hide on walls and ceilings, and drop down for surprise attacks. They will also hide underneath stairways and other objects, waiting to ambush unwary prey. The Skaarj Mothership has a few Pupae breeding areas that the player can become locked in for a time, and the final arena, The Source, is crawling with them throughout the final fight.

Pupae are also featured in Unreal Tournament 2004's Invasion gametype, where they most often appear in earlier waves.

Trivia[]

  • Some levels that were cut from the final release, known as Soledad, Morose and Nexus, are subterranean Pupae breeding facilities that employ a translucent purple fluid to feed the Pupae. This fluid is not seen in the final game, however, so whether it is still a factor in Pupae development is unknown.
