Unreal

Terraniux Underground is the tenth map of the single-player mode of Unreal.

Map description[]

Terraniux Underground is a fairly large transitionary level between Harobed Village and Terraniux. The player finds himself in the underworks of a huge alien facility, where cyborg Mercenaries guard over tanks of glowing green biowaste infested with Slith. It does introduce the Mercenary as an enemy for the first time. The previous map only showed the corpse.

Trivia[]

  • Levelshots for the map were added in the OldUnreal version 227j patch.

Development[]

  • Originally this level and Terraniux were named Terranius.
  • The February beta ends the level right after the lift ride, while later versions introduce the water-lowering mechanic, which they couldn't get to work properly on time, so it was switched instead to level-progression.
  • The elevator sequence was much more complex in the betas, featuring steam coming out of the lift, coronas and dynamic lighting. The steam effects were cut first, then the rest followed after May 07. The betas don't have the panel walk-through while, in the release version, you can hide inside the circuitry due to a BSP bug.
  • The May 07 beta has a soft-lock on the level due to the Slith being swallowed in by the BSP hole. Thus, the causeevent gorille command was required to progress or spawning a new Slith with such tag.
  • The last room in the May07 beta has Tarydium barrels and an extra Mercenary before you push the button.

Easter eggs[]

  • After pressing the button, you'll be directed to the Terraniux mission, however there's also a hidden message that's never shown.

Author's Notes[]

"Terraniux is the first of my Levels you'll see in Unreal. The Level is actually cut in 2 parts, Terralift and Terraniux. Terralift is just an introduction to the Terraniux. The Terraniux SpaceShip crashed on a montain [sic] and parts of the ship were badly damaged. The Mercenaries reused some parts of their crashed spaceship to extend the architecture in the basement f [sic] the mountain and on the other side, so they could access the 2 valleys surrounding the mountain and control the access with doors. I tried to make the introduction of the mercenary as dramatic as possible, with that big lift coming down with that interesting dynamic lighting effect. After defeating your first Mercenary you go to that corridor with the rotating laser beams to fight more Mercenaries."
