The subject of this article appeared in Unreal Tournament 2004.

UnWheel is a custom game modification (mod) for Unreal Tournament 2004. It comes with the Editor's Choice Edition of the game, but it's also available as a free download.

Overview[]

Taken from the mod's Readme file, UnWheel is a driving modification with a focus on fun driving. Rather than just racing, many different vehicle-based gametypes are on offer, giving the player an assortment of different styles of play and environments in which to drive. Along with this wide range of modes of play, UnWheel features every type of four-wheeled vehicle you could think of, from sports and rally cars, to monster trucks, quad-bikes and massive mining trucks.

Vehicles[]

Most vehicles have at least three or four skin variations available, so even when many people choose the same vehicle, you can still look unique.

  • Sports/Racing cars: Sleek and fast, well suited to road driving.
  • Monster Trucks: Giant trucks with giant wheels for giant off-road action.
  • Rally cars: The ideal mix of speed and great on- and off-road handling.
  • Weird and wonderful: A few little (and some rather large) extras to add spice to any round.

Reception[]

Awards and accolades[]

  • The mod earned quite a lot of accolades during the 2003/2004 edition of the Make Something Unreal Contest:[1]
    • Phase 2: Best Non-FPS Mod, Best Vehicle, Best Use of Karma Physics (all of them 1st. place).[1]
    • Phase 3: Best Non-FPS Mod (3rd. place), Best Vehicle (2nd. place), Best Use of Karma Physics (1st. place).[1]
    • Phase 4: Best Non-FPS Mod (7th. place).[1]
    • Grand Finals: Honorary mention.[1]
  • ModDB named the mod the best driving mod of 2004 and 2005.[1]
"Unwheel.... unreal! When it comes to car games I couldn't care less about realism, I just want fast paced crashes and the ability to pull of some serious airtime in an absurd assortment of automobiles. This is exactly what Unwheel delivers. The idea behind UnWheel is not to create the ultimate racing game, or the 4x4 simulation with the best physics, or to specialize in any one area as other modifications and games do, but to simply create an assortment of gametypes and vehicles with the focus on fun driving, whether it be racing, rallying, or simply freestyle driving around."
ModDB[3]
  • Other awards of the mod include PC Zone UK's "Essential Choice" (September/October 2004), Featured Mod on FilePlanet's homepage (EC/MSU Phase 4 version), and featured on UK PC Gamer (Dec 2004).[1]
