Today, we celebrate 25 years of Unreal! On this very day in 1998, the debut entry in the series, Unreal, was released to the world.
Unreal was the very first game to utilize the cutting-edge Unreal Engine. Developed by the then-called Epic MegaGames and designed by Tim Sweeney, Unreal served as a showcase of the capabilities of the newly developed engine. The success of Unreal helped establish the Unreal Engine as a popular and powerful game development tool, leading to its continued evolution and the creation of further Unreal Engine versions which have since been utilized by thousands of titles in the video game world.
Combining impressive graphics, immersive gameplay, memorable multiplayer, impressive level design, great sound and music, and modding support, it spawned several sequels such as the critically-acclaimed Unreal Tournament and Unreal Tournament 2004. Unreal established itself as a standout game of its time and left a lasting impact on the first-person shooter genre.
